Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to 1455 books, the publishing initiative of 1455 Literary Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building community through storytelling. Our mission is to provide writers with a transparent, supportive path to publication—without gatekeeping or compromise.

For Writers

What is 1455 books?

1455 books is the publishing arm of 1455 Literary Arts, focused on amplifying authentic voices through inclusive, mission-driven publishing.

What kinds of work do you publish?

We publish original works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, along with anthologies and special projects that align with our mission to celebrate creativity, diversity, and the transformative power of story.

How do I submit my work?

Calls for submissions are announced regularly on our website and through our newsletter. Each project—such as the 1455 books Contest or the Young Poets Anthology—has its own guidelines and submission period. Visit 1455litarts.org for current opportunities.

Do you accept unsolicited manuscripts?

We currently consider manuscripts only through open submission calls and award programs. This ensures fairness, accessibility, and transparency in our process.

Is there a submission fee?

Some projects, such as the 1455 books Contest, include a modest fee to support editorial and production costs. Others—like the Young Poets Anthology—are completely free to enter, thanks to our sponsors and donors.

What happens after I submit?

Submissions are reviewed by a team of editors, advisors, and guest readers. Selected authors are notified directly, and all entrants receive updates through email.

Do authors receive payment or royalties?

For anthology projects, publication and design costs are fully covered by 1455 and its sponsors. Contributors receive  recognition, and ongoing promotion through our platforms. For full-length works, standard royalty agreements apply.

Do you edit or design the books in-house?

We strongly encourage that your manuscript is professionally edited before submitting to us. At this time, 1455 books does not provide copy editing services. We do provide design support. Our design teams work closely with authors to ensure each book meets professional publishing standards for print while honoring the author’s creative vision.

How are 1455 books distributed?

Titles are available through major retailers including Amazon, Bookshop.org, and Barnes & Noble. They are also distributed to bookstores and libraries via IngramSpark and featured in 1455 events, festivals, and digital channels.

We’re reimagining the purpose of publishing

Stories will shape tomorrow

1455 books was created to make publishing more accessible, equitable, and human. Every title we produce reflects a belief that stories have the power to build bridges, expand empathy, and inspire change. As a nonprofit publisher, we reinvest in creativity—not profit. That means every writer we publish becomes part of a mission-driven community dedicated to connection over competition, and art over algorithm. From debut poets to seasoned authors, 1455 books is where writers find not just publication—but partnership, integrity, and impact.
