Movable Type Issue No. 12 Cover Design
At a risk of leaning into cliché with our freedom theme, this issue’s cover nonetheless obliged a symbolic nod to this concept. An eagle soaring through the sky, free as a bird, seemed too obvious for the rich selection from this year’s Young Poets Contest Winners.
Still, the idea of flying felt appropriate to explore, albeit through another creature of flight: butterflies, forever young, many living for only a few short weeks. However, it goes without saying that emerging from a cocoon into the freedom of flight is only part of the butterfly’s story.
Imagine encountering a fossilized butterfly wing, forever preserved; its life recorded for you to observe, long after its brief time on earth. That final flap, as well as all the flaps that preceded it, may seem like small, trivial events. But, what that butterfly may never know is the part they play on a much more complex system.
These Young Poets, regardless of age, have full stories to tell, imprints to leave–much like a vibrant butterfly flapping its wings, we hope that our Young Poets leave their imprints on the world, too, and it’s an honor if it begins here, being published in Movable Type.
