Once we realized Winchester was the ideal city for 1455, and found the perfect property (a 3,487 square foot compound in the heart of old town on S. Braddock St.), the mission quickly came into focus: revitalize this set of historical buildings. On one hand, the buildings—all in disrepair after years of neglect—will require full renovation, which affords the opportunity to design a venue suitable for 1455’s mission. On the other hand, renovating five buildings involves a great deal of time and money. To date, we have raised the necessary funds to purchase the property, cover year-one operations, complete all pre-construction safeguarding of the buildings, and finalize architectural plans—including interior schematics and landscaping—with an award-winning firm in Winchester. The goal is to complete construction in early-to-mid 2020.

In order to raise the additional $1.3 million needed to complete construction and operations for the first three years, 1455 is engaging with a wide array of potential funders and partners: local and national foundations, corporations, small businesses, and individual donors—both large and small. These generous contributions will be supplemented by earned income in the form of residency fees from visiting writers and workshops. We’ve been fortunate to receive extraordinary assistance from a wide group of committed investors who believe in 1455, helping us cover $500K of the necessary $1.3 million.
